In our quest for higher search engine placement we are always looking for ways to get more incoming links to demonstrate the popularity and importance of our websites. In rating these incoming links, the search engines are looking at both the quantity and the quality of the links involved.
One way to get incoming links is by writing articles. Another way is by arranging 1-way links incoming. This can be by asking relevant sites to link to you (this is possible, but difficult and slow). Or it can be by joining a 3-way links setup and getting links from others into your site (easy and relatively fast).
Links from articles provide quality. This quality comes from the prestige of the article directory or other site where the article is posted, from keyword density and from LSI (Latent Semantic Indexing) of words in the surrounding area. This quality is essential to achieve higher search engine placement.
The prestige of the article directory factor is enhanced by submitting articles to high page rank directories. Keyword density indicates that the keywords are really involved and not just casually mentioned in the subject matter of the text.
LSI quality comes from the context, the relevant associated words that would be expected to occur in the vicinity of our keywords, when the subject matter is really about what the keywords suggest. Words with high LSI will naturally be present in articles about the keywords' subject, and thus will be close to the link.
Quantity of article links is limited by the number of high-ranking directory sites you can find and the number of well-written articles you can get published
One-way links from a 3-way link setup provide quantity. It is relatively easy to get lots of links in. But their quality will be lower since there is usually only about 250 characters or so of text associated with the keyword used as the anchor link text. And many come from sites not at all closely related to yours.
You gain some quality points if the linking site has some of your same keywords or possibly related words that have high LSI for your keywords. You would lose quality points if reciprocal links are found. But regardless, you need these 1-way links in for their quantity to get higher search engine placement.
But when you put the two, article writing and 1-way links, together, you get a synergistic effect that means 1 + 1 = more than 2 (maybe 3 to 5). You get quality (from the articles) and quantity (from the 1 way links) that reinforce each other. Together they "cover the waterfront" and complement each other.
They end up contributing more "link juice" together, in combination, than the sum of what each would contribute separately.
Makes for a winning combination for higher search engine placement.
